Oak Terrace

Unlocking the full potential of this terrace house floor plan, creating seamless movement throughout.

The Oak Terrace is a project where small decisions have had a great impact. The clients briefed us to renovate the ground and lower ground floors of their South London terrace house, modernising the Victorian floor plan and details to offer a contemporary, family home.

In assessing the brief, we found that by inverting the kitchen and living zones, we could unlock the spatial flow of the home. By moving the kitchen from the ground floor to the lower ground floor, we were able to create a new anchor to the home, a family-focused kitchen, dining and living space with a new rear patio for outdoor dining. This simple change allows the ground floor to play host to a new home office and TV space, the new tech heart of the house.

We designed a smooth storage wall of oak veneer custom joinery and birch ply pantry cabinets to keep the house clutter free. The interior palette was inspired by our clients' time living in Japan, and their extensive ceramics collection.

We always look for details and materials to retain and reuse, maintaining the character and reducing the environmental impact of each project. At the Oak Terrace, we retained original features including parquet floors, architraves and doors, and reused the existing sanitaryware, reviving the bathroom with tiles and colour.

The resulting home is one with flexible yet defined spaces for living, cooking, dining, relaxing and working, balancing the character of the original house with new ways of living.
